The "Batterij Bernaert" is a historical German troop bunker from World War II, located in Middelkerke, Belgium. The name refers to a nearby brewery.
The bunker was part of "Stützpunkt Leeb," a component of the Atlantic Wall, the extensive defensive line that Nazi Germany built along the West European coast. Eleven civilians and an unprecedented number of German soldiers lost their lives here on August 4, 1944, as a result of an American bombing raid with 11 B-17 airplanes on the German coastal battery.
