Discover all benefitsThis walk is mainly on paved paths and starts from a nice car park. We did and walked the walk in April 2022 and it took us almost 4 hours.
Almost immediately at the beginning of the walk we pass the old station of Homburg where we will see a large collection of trains. Here, traces of what was once railway line 38 are still clearly visible. We follow the route of railway line 38 which is now a paved road (Ravel 38). One kilometer from the starting point, we cross the Laschet tunnel. Well, the tunnel is no more and the information panel explains why.
After about 3 km we cross the bridge over railway line 24, which is still in use. In the distance, we see the Remersdaal tunnel.
We follow the route of the railway line 38 to Plombières. Here we walk along the old mining site. At the point of 6 km there is a nice pike bench-. In the mining area we find other nice places for picnic-.
From here we follow the route of the old railway line 39 (Ravel 39) to the Moresnet viaduct. On the way we walk along the Geul, see rapids and an old dilapidated railway bridge. At the dilapidated railway bridge we make a small detour under the bridge and then on a meadow. Back on the main path, we see after some time in the distance the viaduct of Moresnet.
We walk in a small loop around the Moresnet viaduct to get a good overview of the viaduct.
After the viaduct, we walk a few hundred meters along a busy road! Note!
The Avenue de l'Europe is fortunately spacious and quiet. Here we take a last look at the viaduct.
Just past the 10 km point, we pass the abandoned Montzen train station, popular as Urbex location.
We drive through the center of Montzen and at one point we see railway line 24 at the bottom left. We pass an information point about Montzen train station and the old water tower that has now been converted into a holiday home.
By a narrow road we meander through the landscape and at one point we are on the bridge over railway line 24 for the second time. After that, we follow a small route of what was once railway line 38 and through the back of the church of Homburg we return to the parking lot.
