The Tuyltermolen walk in Herkenrode (Kuringen)

The Tuiltermolen was originally intended to obtain its thrust from a reservoir, formed by a depression all around. Later, the Cistercians had a branch of the Demer dug over a length of about 800 m to give the mill more momentum. This branch with a width of 4m by 1.5m depth was realised along the forest 'Molendick'; A dike (Dick) was built that could be used as a connecting road between the mill and the abbey, because there was no actual abbey mill at that time.

The last residents and elderly local residents told the members of vzw Herkenrode that the building behind the Tuiltermolen also used to have the function of a baking oven. Its shape and its location: slightly removed from the mill/farm because of the fire hazard when firing the furnace. The baking oven is fully operational again and sandwiches, speculoos and pizzas are regularly baked in it.

Parking: spacious parking on the left along the Herkenrodedreef

Public transport: the train to Hasselt station. At the station square take bus 51 to the Herkenrode stop on the Herkenrodedreef. From the bus stop it is about 1 km to the abbey site.

By bike: the Herkenrode Abbey site is located between junctions 94 and 95 of the Limburg cycle route network. The VISITOR's RECEPTION is a recognized bicycle café.
