In the Wormelaar in Zemst you can walk along monumental old trees, ponds and a historic chapel. In spring, spring bloomers adorn the old forest. The great pimpernel and the crested salamander find a home here.
On the Ferraris maps (1777) the area can be seen as the Bois du Wormelaer, then the forest was a lot larger. The southern part of the modern forest then consisted of fields, the fields north of the forest were part of the forest; So it could be said that the forest has shifted to the south over time. The tiny historic hamlet of Wormelaar is named after this forest.
In the 19th century the area was purchased by Martial Deudon d'Heysbroeck from Muizen (hence the name 'De Don'), who gave the whole the current view. Trees were planted, including a number of ornamental species, and the pond took its final shape. A duck cage is until today the designation of the purpose of the establishment, a hunting ground for the family. Meanwhile, the forest is several centuries old and the trees present bear witness to their age with dignity.
The area was for a long time owned by the Baron d'Arnethan. At the beginning of 2015, the area was purchased by Natuurpunt vzw.
