Description by the author

Appointment at the square in front of the neo-Gothic St. Joseph Church (1889) of Petit-Dour (V), a hamlet of Dour. It is located to the southwest of Mons in the old industrial basin of the Borinage. You pass by there on the way from Sars-la-Bruyère, a district of Frameries, to Dour. Dour itself is mainly known for its annual festival (four days in July) of alternative music. Walk diagonally across from the church, slightly to the left into the rue du Trieu and shortly afterwards bend left into the rue Ulysse Moury. At the end of the street turn right into the rue Cauderloo and immediately at the fork turn right uphill. After 100 m, past house number 84, turn left and down. At the end of this street turn right and then left onto a narrow path into the woods (red and white GR signs). Ignore a wide tractor track and walk straight ahead. The path widens and after 250 m you follow the GR signs and turn right. Another 300 m further you curve left and after 100 m you choose the wider paved forest road to the right. Stay to the right on this wide forest road after 50 m and after another 300 m stay left at a fork by the forest stream. You walk here through the Bois de Saint Ghislain, a beautiful mixed forest with plenty of undergrowth and beautifully filtered light. Also enjoy the clear, bubbling water in the stream below you on the left. After another 300 m you continue straight at a junction of forest paths and about a kilometer later you exit the woods through a barrier, still on the same wide forest road. Turn right into the rue du Rossignol, on asphalt and quite uphill. To the left, you have a nice view. The village on the horizon to the left is Petit-Wasmes: Vincent Van Gogh gave Bible readings there for several months in 1879 to a small Protestant community. At the end of the rue du Rossignol turn right and after 250 m diagonally right into the woods. Immediately ignore a narrow path to the right. After 400 m you arrive at a junction with beautiful old, but unreadable direction signs. Here turn left and continue straight to the main road. Cross over, continue straight ahead and ignore all side roads. The forest is now called Bois de l’Évêque, but remains just as varied, with plenty of herbs, woodland dock, and yellow mustard in the summer. After one and a half kilometers, you arrive at a hunting pavilion, currently out of use (due to restoration?), but nearby there is a picnic area. Immediately afterwards, cross the main road and continue into what is now called Bois de Sart-la-Bruyère. After 600 m you reach a junction of six forest roads with also beautiful old, but unreadable direction signs. Walk to the right (on the second forest path from the right) and after 800 m exit the woods through a barrier, which is now called Bois de Blaugies. The French border is nearby, less than one and a half kilometers away, and the nearest French town is Bavay, less than ten kilometers away. It was one of the most important Gallo-Roman sites of Northern Gaul and is currently an important archaeological site. To the right on a wide gravel road along the forest. Soon you have a nice view to the left. The gravel road continues through the forest and then becomes an asphalt road. After 500 m you arrive at the Auberge des Aulnes (Alder Trees), with a beautiful terrace: a perfect opportunity for a well-deserved refreshment or snack. At the T-junction turn right into the rue des Vainqueurs and after 400 m turn left into the rue Planquette. The asphalt road turns into a gravel road and takes you to the rue de la Planche Cabeille. To the right until you reach the rue Ropaix and here turn left, back along the main road for 700 m to the church.
