Description by the author

The walk starts in the center of Grobbendonk where there is ample parking available at Astridplein (V). Grobbendonk is one of the many beautiful municipalities in the Kempen with plenty of picturesque spots. Particularly the still-active watermill at the confluence of the Kleine Nete and the Aa captures the imagination. Unfortunately, this charming place is just not on our walking route today; those who have the time and inclination can always take a little detour. We leave Astridplein with the church on our right side and pass consecutively the old rectory and the town hall to arrive at the roundabout where walking junction (WKP) 18 is indicated. Be careful when crossing, and soon you will reach a small bridge over the Kleine Nete, at WKP 19. You turn right here, towards WKP 20. Immediately, you walk into the typically fen landscape (especially wet grasslands) that is characteristic of the river. The Kleine Nete has become one of the most fish-rich rivers in Flanders, partly due to the construction of several fish ladders. You follow the slightly meandering Kleine Nete until you reach the Albertkanaal. Turn right here. At the pumping station ① (mill installation), you are immediately at WKP 20. The Kleine Nete continues its flow on the other side of the Albertkanaal towards Lier, where it merges with the Grote Nete, forming the Nete. From there, it continues to Rumst where the Nete and Dijle meet, forming the Rupel. • You continue along the Albertkanaal, towards WKP 22. The Albertkanaal, which with its 129 km length connects the port of Antwerp with Liège, was constructed between 1930 and 1939. Due to World War II, it was not officially put into use until 1947. The Flemish government's choice to promote inland navigation has only increased the importance of the Albertkanaal. On the other side of the canal, you notice several large companies of very diverse nature. • You keep following the Albertkanaal until you are opposite the large container terminal, where you turn right. You follow WKP 22 and walk into 't Vlot. Where you reach WKP 22, if you go 100 m to the right, you can take a break at Brasserie-Taverne Eisterlee. From WKP 22, you walk towards WKP 16, passing a beautiful example of a Kempen long-gabled farmhouse ②. At WKP 16, you can choose. • For the shortcut, turn right here to WKP 23. The long route goes left, towards WKP 24. You continue along the road, ignoring all side roads, until you pass a small PIDPA building on your left side. Here, turn right into Lorkendreef. You now step over an unpaved path. At WKP 24, turn right to WKP 23. • You continue following this delightful forest path until you come again to a paved road marked by WKP 23. Be careful here: the real WKP is 30 meters to the right at Papenbergstraat ③. Here, turn left to WKP 25. At the next T-intersection, turn left again, and then you follow 200 m to the right on the busy Viersel-Grobbendonk road. At house number 103, turn left. • You now walk zigzag through the Kerkeveld neighborhood. Via a quiet road through the pine forest typical for the Kempen, you reach WKP 25. Here, turn right. You pass the beautiful chapel of Boshoven and a little further on, at the roundabout, you cross the main road. You walk through Nijverheidsstraat 52-62, and past the house with number 62, you find yourself back in greenery. In dry weather, this is perfectly feasible for wheelchairs and strollers. You quickly reach WKP 13 where you look straight at the church tower of Grobbendonk. Here, turn right, towards WKP 18. After passing the cemetery ④, turn left. Always straight ahead, you will reach Astridplein again via Bergstraat, where the walk started.
