The toponym "Nossegem" goes back to the original Nothengem. This toponym is of Germanic origin and a corruption of the three-part Germanic word Nanthingahaim. The first part (Nanth) comes from a first name that literally means "courageous" or "ventured". Haim (-heme) means dwelling, while the inga indicates that it is a genitive form. Nanthingahaim thus means "dwelling of the people of Nantho".
In the local dialect, the name of the village is pronounced Noskoem .
