Arenberg Castle Walk - Heverlee

Heverlee benefits from the rich inheritance of the Dukes of Arenberg. The park with Renaissance castle and Romanesque chapel, and the Egenhovenbos are remnants of the former domain of this important noble family. The dukes have always supported scientific research at the university. After the First World War, the Arenbergpark came into the possession of the university, which developed a science campus there.

But even more important is the green heritage that has been preserved on this domain. The castle park has a rich collection of curious trees. The ponds and the Dijle create a water-rich biotope for a lot of wild flora and fauna. The humid Egenhovenbos with numerous springs is completely different from the drier Heverleebos.

It is enclosed between the Dijle and its tributary the Voer. Native pedunculate oaks even serve as a seed bank. ANB regularly collects acorns to protect this native tree species through selective cultivation. Source: www.visitleuven.be
