Very often you walk in the goose pass on narrow dirt paths that wind between meadows, along the edges of green forests and between arable land. You will also not ignore the soggy and very green valleys. Sometimes you walk in a residual forest. Most of the region's forests are private and inaccessible.
You start the tour in Mekingen, a hamlet of Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, in the parking lot of the café In de Oude Smis van Mekingen, one of the most authentic folk cafés in Flanders. The café is located in the shadow of the huge transmission tower in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw.
After about four km, the blunt bell tower of Sint-Pieters-Leeuw appears. It is located on an elevation in the landscape. You descend to the Volsembroek and the Zuunbeek.
In Oudenaken you walk to the wet and marshy valley of Molenbeek, a beauty! You climb and pass old hooves from the Molenbeek valley towards Sint-Laureins-Berchem, the smallest village (barely 117 ha) of Leeuw-Saint-Pierre.
Behind the church, you continue the journey to the estates of Gaasbeek Castle.
Witrood sends you out of the castle park to the village square of Gaasbeek with its baroque-looking Notre-Dame church
The pedometer reads 12.8 km. It's time to "linger" around the square in the café of the village De Pajot.
After eating and drinking, you swing between gravel fields and individual dirt roads, walking along soggy meadows where water from the many side streams of the Molenbeek finds its flood zone and ends on the outskirts of Elingen (a district of Pepingen). A village full of chapels. Over the years, the rural tranquility of the small town of Elingen has attracted many artists from which the "Artselingen" initiative was born. Visual arts and poetry were honored.
In the hamlet of Schamelbeek you will once again find yourself in the beautiful nature reserve around the Zuunbeek, still young and strongly winding. You walk through residual groves on wet soils and through shady green corridors. We extend this jewel for hikers to the Labbeek valley with its many wooded edges. The Labbeek forms the border between Sint-Pieters-Leeuw and Halle.
In the Alsput, hamlet of Halle, a sloping dirt road sends you between arable land to the bat bunker of Stroppen.
Beyond the bunker, you choose the Cardinal Cardijn hiking trail which guides you with a wide dirt road between grain and corn fields through the Red Creek valley and further between the pollard willows to the hamlet of Mekingen, the starting point.
