Discover all benefitsFROM 'NATIONAL REDUIT' TO BRIALMONT ROUTE
After independence in 1830, Belgium was imposed strict neutrality. Because our country had no significant natural defense, they opted for a 'National Reduit'. In the event of an enemy invasion, the army would retreat to Antwerp and resist until our allies came to the rescue. The new defence concept included a Great Wall and a series of forts around Antwerp, designed by Captain Henri Alexis Brialmont. In just five years (1859-1864), 13,000 workers built eight, almost identical brick forts between Wijnegem and Hoboken. A feat. Both economically and militarily, the forts were quickly outpaced. In 1965, the ramparts almost completely disappeared before the construction of the antwerp ring road. The forts themselves - except for that of Wijnegem - were beautifully preserved. Today you can walk, cycle or exercise in an attractive, green environment. Cultural events often take place there. The dark, damp rooms are a popular wintering spot for bats. The Brialmont route illustrates a fascinating episode in Antwerp's history. The main loop connects eight forts. The variant runs along the former Military Hospital in Berchem. More details about the forts in and around Antwerp on www.fortengordels.be
This route can also be extended with a visit to the Old Military Hospital ('t Groen Kwartier). Adjusted length: 46 km.
Or one can choose to do the loop in two parts: Eastern and Western variant - each loop is about 25 km.
Both variants can be found here .
