Iron Curtain Trail

The Iron Curtain Trail (ICT) or Eurovelo cycle route no. 13 also runs through the Upper Bavarian Forest Nature Park. The route in the district runs along the former "Iron Curtain", i.e. also along the Bavarian-Czech border. The cycle path often crosses into Czech territory and then back into Bavarian territory. Over 9000 kilometers long, the route begins at the Barents Sea, along the Norwegian and Finnish-Russian border to the Baltic Sea. Through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Kaliningrad, Poland and the former GDR. From Lübeck to the Saxon-Bavarian-Czech border triangle, the cycle trail follows the former inner-German border strip. It then leads over the heights of the Bohemian Forest, past Moravia and the Slovakian capital Bratislava, before crossing the Danube at Vienna. Along the southern border of Hungary, the route passes through Slovenia, Croatia and Vojvodina. Between Romania and Serbia, the route largely follows the course of the Danube before finally ending at the northernmost point of Turkey on the Black Sea coast via Bulgaria, Macedonia and Greece. The route crosses several national parks with interesting flora and fauna and connects a variety of unique landscapes that have remained virtually untouched due to their border location and former restricted zones. However, it also connects countless memorials, museums and facilities that commemorate the history of the division of Europe and how it was overcome by the peaceful revolution in Eastern Europe.
