In the early 1800s, mining went deeper into the ground and reached the much more difficult to access seams of coal. Huge steam engines provided drainage for the tunnels, which were built with several floors at the same time. The yield increased enormously. The fatty coal was very suitable for processing into coke.
When this complex opened, it was the world's most modern mine. Moreover, building with brick and steel was an architectural tour de force.
The site now houses restaurants, design companies and a visitor centre that can be reached via the longest escalator in Europe 'made by ThyssenKrupp'. A casino is also housed in the midst of beautifully lit coke batteries.
