At the age of 17, Felix Wankel (1902-1988) already thought it would be much more efficient to let a four-stroke engine run its four phases continuously instead of going up and down. At the age of 22, he established his own workshop in Heidelberg where he could develop his idea, even though he was not an engine builder. Later he would develop the Wankel engine.
