Wesel (Dutch (outdated): Wezel) is a historic (fortified) town and the capital of the eponymous district of Wesel in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Wesel is located on the river Rhine, situated between the Ruhr area and the Dutch border near Bocholt. The city has a population of 60,750. Wesel has strong ties with the Netherlands and its history. During the Capture of Wesel (1629), the city was freed from Spanish occupation. During the Eighty Years' War, the city experienced a large number of Protestant Dutch refugees fleeing from Spanish persecution.
