Firrel

The community was founded in 1762 as a colony at the instigation of tenant farmers from the community of Bagband. The name Firrel was chosen to designate a sand ridge in a marshy area. The colonists had to prove that they had cultivated fields in the area. By 1790, there were already 32 houses counted in the bog colony. Their number increased from over 50 to 74 in the year 1807. The area of the houses and the associated plots amounted to 170 hectares. However, development proceeded significantly slower in the following decades: by 1841, the number of houses had only risen to 89, and by 1862 to 92, as the bog colonists had already increasingly drained the adjacent bog. There were no possibilities for expansion for new colonies. Consequently, from the mid-19th century, there was a wave of emigration, particularly to the USA. It wasn't until around the turn of the 20th century that there was again an increase in population. The population figures support this: in 1811, the place had 311 inhabitants. Their number rose from 346 to 524 in the year 1848. After that, a decline was recorded: in 1858, there were only 485 inhabitants, and in 1880, there were only 418. Only after World War I did the population reach 521 again, the level of 1848.
