The village was first documented in the Ratzeburg tithe register of 1230 and is a former fishing village. Around 1500, the place was called Landsatze. On April 17, 1893, the entire village was destroyed by arson. Until 1964, the land around Lanze was also often affected by floods, and a pumping station today drains the southern field area.
Of the nine seats in the municipal council, the voters' association WGL has held four seats since the municipal elections in 2013, and the voters' association AAL has five.
