Brackel was first mentioned in writing on February 6, 1300, in the document book of the St. Michaelis Monastery in Lüneburg. Traces of settlement in the area can be found in findings from prehistoric times, from the late Stone Age through the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. These findings indicate that the main settlement sites were not in the present location, but rather towards Quarrendorf and Toppenstedt. A burial find from the Jastorf culture suggests that people were already buried in Brackel around 550 to 400 BC.
On July 1, 1972, the municipality of Thieshope was incorporated.
