Auhagen is a municipality in the district of Schaumburg in Lower Saxony. The municipality is part of the Samtgemeinde Sachsenhagen and consists of the districts of Auhagen and Düdinghausen.
Former names of Auhagen included Ouhaghen in 1382, Auhaghen in 1505, Awhagen in 1540, and Awehagenn in 1550. The name element “-hagen,” which is included in this place name, belongs to Old High German “hagan,” Middle High German “hagen,” and is a derivative of Old High German “-hag,” “-hac,” or Middle High German “hag” meaning “enclosure, enclosed property, pasture, hedge.” “-hagen” in place names can refer to an enclosed space, district, or an enclosed woodland. The place name element “Au” comes from “Aue” meaning “land by the water.”
