Wedau is a district of Duisburg in the Duisburg-Süd urban district. In this district, 5,014 people live on 4.78 km².
The name Wedau, derived from Weidenaue, referred to a part of the large wetland area influenced by the streams Pootbach, Bummelbach, Wambach, Haubach, and Dickelsbach as early as the beginning of the 14th century. This name appears in the Lancizollesche land register of 1733 as Weidau and in the map by Pepperhoff in 1837 as Weddau. Two documents from the Abbey of Kaiserswerth from 1318 and 1355 regarding the sale of two parcels of land named Wedowen could not be definitively assigned to the location of Wedau, even though the old form of au, once ouwe, owe, or ow, was a designation for a moist lowland.
