Through a find in 1926, Vogelheim became well-known beyond the region, as the Vogelheimer Blade was discovered, the oldest human tool in the area.
In the Middle Ages, Vogelheim was a rural area primarily shaped by the water castles and manorial estates of Heck and Horl. This early peasant settlement only developed into a coal miners' settlement after 1900. With the closure of the Emil-Emscher colliery in 1973, structural change began. The industrial lands were transformed into commercial areas with small and medium-sized industrial and craft businesses. Furthermore, the industrial establishments at the city port, along with two nursing and care homes, as well as the wholesale and retail trade, provide many citizens with jobs today.
