Neumühl used to belong to the urban district of Hamborn, which was merged with the urban district of Duisburg in 1929, and was named after the New Mill from the 14th century, around which the district of Neumühl settled. Directly at the present city border with Oberhausen lay the house of Temminghoven, which existed since at least the 13th century and was demolished in the 20th century.
