Frintrop is the westernmost district of the city of Essen, bordering on the neighboring cities of Oberhausen and Mülheim an der Ruhr. To the northeast is the Essen district of Dellwig and to the south the district of Bedingrade.
Frintrop extends over two levels: the popularly known Oberfrintrop with the St. Josef Church in the street Himmelpforten, and Unterfrintrop with the Marktplatz and the Leoplatz. Above and below result from the peripheral location of the village on the southern slope of the Emscher valley. The Schildberg offers a far-reaching view over the valley, whereby, according to the official cadastre, the geographically highest point is between Reck- and Frintroper Straße at an altitude of 87.2 m, and the lowest near the Schemmannsfeld road with a height of 36 m.
