Kleve (German: Kleve) is a town in the district of Kleve in the western part of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, ten kilometres south of the Rhine River, and not far from the Dutch border at Nijmegen and 's-Heerenberg. Furthermore, Kleve is located near the German city of Emmerich and the forest area of Reichswald.Kleve has 49,477 inhabitants and covers an area of approximately 98 km². The city was granted city rights in 1242. The place is located on the slope of an glacial moraine. This moraine borders the valley of the Rhine. As a result, part of Cleves is very hilly. The local dialect is Kleverlands or Kleves, a regional language belonging to Dutch.
