Kleef (Duits: Kleve) is een stad in het district Kleef in het westen van de Duitse deelstaat Noordrijn-Westfalen, tien kilometer ten zuiden van de rivier de Rijn, en niet ver van de Nederlandse grens bij Nijmegen en 's-Heerenberg. Verder ligt Kleef in de buurt van Duitse stad Emmerik en het bosgebied Reichswald.Kleef telt 49.477 inwoners en heeft een oppervlakte van ongeveer 98 km². De stad kreeg in 1242 stadsrechten. De plaats ligt op de helling van een stuwwal uit de ijstijd. Deze stuwwal begrenst het dal van de Rijn. Een gedeelte van Kleef is daardoor erg heuvelachtig.Het plaatselijke dialect is het Kleverlands of het Kleefs, een tot het Nederlands behorende streektaal.
