Checkpoint Charlie was a checkpoint at the border of the American and Russian sectors during the division of Berlin, at a crossing in the Berlin Wall on Friedrichstraße.
Because this was the third crossing at the border between West and East (since the establishment of the spheres of influence after World War II), it was named Charlie, after the third letter of the NATO phonetic alphabet.
