Marien Hospital Witten

The Marien Hospital Witten is a Catholic hospital in Witten. Annually, more than 21,000 patients are treated inpatient and about 42,000 patients on an outpatient basis. The clinic is an academic teaching hospital of the universities of Bochum and Witten/Herdecke.

The Marien Hospital was opened on November 8, 1858. The Catholic community signed a contract with the motherhouse of the Sisters of Saint Vincent in Paderborn, who took over the care. A number of expansions occurred. By 1903, the building had been raised by two floors, providing more than 220 beds. In 1926, construction of a new building began. During World War II, an air raid on December 12, 1944, severely damaged the building. On March 19, 1945, another heavy air raid almost completely destroyed the building. Reconstruction took two years. In 1959, two residential buildings for sisters were established. Further expansions followed to the north. Additional construction measures took place in 1982 and 2004. The hospital now has an underground parking garage. Since mid-2008, the hospital has belonged to the St. Vincenz Group Ruhr GmbH.
