The Hamel is a river of 20 kilometers in length, which flows into the Weser. The catchment area is located in Hamelin-Pyrmont in Lower Saxony.
The Hamel rises on the Süntel ridge in the Weser Uplands and flows from there through the Deister-Süntel valley and the Weser valley where it flows into the Weser. The source is located on private property in the village of Hamelspringe, from where the watercourse flows southwards to Bad Münder am Deister and Hamelin.
Just before Hamelin there is a weir through which the course is split into the Hamel and Fluthamel. As a result, the water flows into the Weser in two places.
