Rudolstadt Theater

The Rudolstadt Theater is a theater in Rudolstadt in Thuringia. It traces its tradition back to the princely summer theater founded in 1792/93. The Thuringian State Theater Rudolstadt is also the main venue for the Thuringian Symphony Orchestra Saalfeld-Rudolstadt. For this reason, its full name is Thuringian State Theater Rudolstadt – Thuringian Symphony Orchestra Saalfeld-Rudolstadt GmbH. The theater is run by an association that includes the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt as well as the cities of Rudolstadt and Saalfeld/Saale.
The theater was built at the instigation of the ruling princes in Rudolstadt as a summer theater on the Anger. From 1794 to 1803, the theater was performed by the Weimar acting troupe. Goethe signed the contract for this on May 12, 1794. The last point was particularly controversial, as it granted free admission not only to the court society but also to their guests. Goethe agreed, but it is known that the guest performances in Bad Lauchstädt and Rudolstadt were a “brilliant business” and the chamberlain “smiled with his whole face” during the billing.
