The Rüpingsbach and its most important tributary, the Grotenbach, form a flowing water in the south of Dortmund and have a combined length of eight kilometres.
The historical source of the Grotenbach is located in today's Witten district of Annen in Bonnermannsfeld. There, a trickle still flows along the path of the same name, but today the Grotenbach begins a few hundred meters further at the pipe outlet of the former Annen cast steel works. While still in Annen, he took up the Heiliger Bach and the Steinbach. While the former has dried up due to mountain depressions, the Steinbach still rises in the Herrenholz in the Ardey, but disappears south of Annen in the canal.
