El Rüpingsbach y su afluente más importante, el Grotenbach, forman un río en el sur de Dortmund y tienen juntos una longitud de ocho kilómetros.
La fuente histórica del Grotenbach se encuentra en el actual distrito Annen de Witten, en Bonnermannsfeld. Allí aún fluye un arroyo a lo largo del camino del mismo nombre, sin embargo, hoy el Grotenbach comienza varios cientos de metros más adelante, en la salida de tubo de la antigua fábrica de acero fundido de Annen. Aún en Annen, recogió el Heiligen Bach y el Steinbach. Mientras que el primero se ha secado debido a hundimientos mineros, el Steinbach brota hasta hoy en Herrenholz en Ardey, aunque desaparece al sur de Annen en el canal.
