The Karthane is a left tributary of the Stepenitz River in the district of Prignitz. Its length is 48 kilometers, it has tributaries such as the Cederbach and a number of small streams and meadow ditches. The Karthane watershed covers 436.8 km².
The sources of the Karthane are in the area north of Klein Woltersdorf in the municipality of Groß Pankow, near the village of Seefeld, between the 128-metre-high Butterberg and the 120-metre-high Wahrberg.
