Description

The Capuchin Monastery in Koblenz is a former monastery of the Capuchin friars located in the city of Koblenz. The monastery has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2002. Since the departure of the brothers, the church has served as a parish church.
At the request of the Elector of Trier Philipp Christoph von Sötern, the Capuchins settled in 1627 in Ehrenbreitstein near Koblenz. On October 18, 1628, the first stone was laid for the construction of a monastery, which was completed in 1629 and dedicated to the apostles Philip and James. During the Thirty Years' War, both Ehrenbreitstein and the monastery were destroyed in fierce fighting around the fortress in 1636. Reconstruction followed in 1655 under Elector Karl Kaspar von der Leyen. Auxiliary bishop Otto Johann Theodor von Senheim consecrated the new building to the patron saints Francis of Assisi, Charles Borromeo, and the apostle Philip a year later.
