Seeburg Castle is a Renaissance castle in the district of Mansfeld-South Harz, Saxony-Anhalt. It takes over the site of an older fortified castle, mentioned in the Hersfeld terrier and held by the Counts of Mansfeld.
Seeburg Castle on the shores of Lake Süssen has long been confused with Hoohseoburg Castle, which was mentioned several times in the 740s. Carloman, the son of Charles Martel, had undertaken a military campaign through present-day Ostphalia in 743 and had captured the fort of Hoohseoburg, an important fortress of the Saxon prince Theodoric, who had been taken prisoner. The latter had to pay tribute for his release. Having taken up arms again in 744 against the Frankish authority, he was again defeated and the fort of Seeburg was certainly razed to the ground.
