The Gürzenich - "the products of Cologne square" - was built for the Gürzenich family as an urban festival hall from 1441 to 1447 on the site.
In the banquet hall on the upper floor, honorary guests from Cologne were celebrated, celebrations of emperors, princes, and citizens were held, as well as coronation ceremonies, court days, and a Reichstag.
17. It has exclusively functioned as a department store for centuries. In 1820, the tradition of the medieval celebration hall was revived and soon the building gained significance as the most important organizational address in Cologne.
After the destruction during World War II, it was rebuilt in 1955.
The "Gürzenich Orchestra" has also gained recognition at a supranational level. The most popular festivities have since been part of the carnival organizations, then as they are today.
