Kniphausen Castle in Fedderwarden in the urban area of Wilhelmshaven in Lower Saxony was built in 1438 and eventually had "the typical appearance of a noble residence of the late Renaissance." In 1666/67, it was expanded into a fortress with four corner bastions.
The late medieval castle was built on the northern shore of the Maade at that time, which widened here to form a bay towards the Jade.
