The New University Street is located in the Mainz Old Town between Schillerstraße and Münsterstraße. It was established at the end of the 18th century and named in honor of the then owner, the University Fund. Houses 5 to 9 are protected as a monument zone.
The area where the street extends was largely undeveloped in the Middle Ages until the expansion of the Thiermarkt or Dietsmarcktstraße. It was not until the Bleichenviertel was drained and released for construction in 1656 under the rule of Elector Johann Philipp von Schönborn, and a connection was established between Große Bleiche and Thiermarkt, that the development of the land became interesting. The Altmünster Abbey began constructing a row of rental houses on the previously strategically acquired former garden plots from 1699 until 1719; these became known as the Altmünster Nunnery Houses.
