Bohlsen Watermill

The Bohlsen Watermill is a watermill on the river Gerdau, which is located in the Bohlsen district of the municipality of Gerdau in the Lüneburg Heath. Today, it is the only watermill still in commercial operation in the district of Uelzen. It is the headquarters of the nationally known milling and baking company Bohlsener Mühle, which processes organically grown grain.
In Bohlsen, a mill on the Gerdau was first mentioned in a document in 1265, when three water wheels drove a grain mill, an oil mill and a bake mill. The history of today's Bohlsen watermill also dates back to the 13th century. When the mill got its first wooden turbine in 1852, the mill building was made of red brick. In recent decades, several new buildings have been built for the mill operation, such as granaries, bakery and warehouse buildings. After the miller's son took over the business from his father in 1979, he switched to processing organically grown grain. At that time, the mill had two employees and the supply was carried out by two farmers with an organic-biological operation. In 1983, a bakery for organic products was built on the mill site, which became a wholemeal bakery in 1989. The mill, which has since expanded considerably, set up a larger baking plant on the outskirts of the village in 2004.
