Rheda Castle is one of the mighty early moated castles in Westphalia, which were at the same time the centre of a direct imperial rule and underwent the transformation from the defensive building of the Middle Ages to the baroque residence of the sovereign. Under the protection of the castle, the town of Rheda was founded in the 14th century as the economic centre of the small lordship of Rheda.
