The Altstadtmarkt Fountain, recently sometimes referred to as the Marien Fountain, has stood on the Altstadtmarkt in Braunschweig since its construction at the end of November 1408. Alongside the Braunschweiger Lion, the Altstadtmarkt Fountain is one of the few free-standing monuments of international significance in the city.
It is a late Gothic three-basin fountain, which, as can be read on the edge of the lowest basin in Latin, was cast in the year of our Lord 1408 on the eve of St. Catherine's Day, that is, on November 24, 1408. The material used for the casting is lead from the Rammelsberg, located about 50 kilometers south of the city in Goslar.
