Delmenhorst Castle, also called Schloss Delmenhorst, is a former water castle located on the "Burginsel" at the southern edge of the center of the city of Delmenhorst in the Oldenburg region of Lower Saxony in the Delmenau. The castle was the center of the city and county of Delmenhorst for nearly 500 years.
After the end of the Stedinger Wars in 1234, the Counts of Oldenburg founded a water castle surrounded by two moats in the marshy Delmeniederung, starting with a small farm called "De Horst," to secure their conquered Stedinger territory. On July 27, 1259, the castle was first mentioned in a document as ... in castro nostro Delmenhorst during the sealing of a land sale by Count Johann I of Oldenburg.
