The airfield can look back on a long history. It was set up in the 1930s by Weser-Flugzeugbau GmbH. The neighboring Weserflug plant in Lemwerder became the VFW final assembly plant in 1961, which built the VFW 614 and Transall C-160 in the 1960s and 1970s, among other things. VFW became part of Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm, which in turn was merged into DASA, which eventually became part of the aerospace group EADS.
