The port city of Emden in East Frisia has a large number of preserved bunkers. During World War II, starting in 1940, 35 large air raid shelters and another 141 splinter-proof small bunkers were built in Emden. This may be explained by the significance of Emden during World War II as a port and shipyard location, which led to corresponding air strikes.
