The Herrenholz is a state forest of about 700 hectares in the Lower Saxony municipalities of Goldenstedt and Visbek in the district of Vechta. An approximately 287-hectare part of the forest is designated as a nature reserve.
The Herrenholz is located northeast of Vechta in the south of the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park on a historically old forest site. The forest area can be traced back to at least the year 819. At that time, it was mentioned as the "Princely Woods on Hollwedehusen" in a letter of protection from the German Emperor Ludwig the Pious. Later, the forest was used by princes and lords for hunting and timber production. This gave it the name "Herrenholz".
