With about 1500 students, the Pelizaeus-Gymnasium is the largest of six grammar schools in the city of Paderborn. It bears the name of its founder, Johanna Pelizaeus, who, as a young teacher, built a private Catholic "higher girls' school" with boarding school in Paderborn in 1859 with the support of church circles. For girls over the age of 14, the Pelizaeus-Gymnasium was the first Catholic secondary educational institution in Paderborn. Shortly before, a Protestant secondary school for girls had been established.
