The Duisburg Alte Emscher sewage treatment plant was built in 1936 as a round basin plant near the banks of the Rhine in the Duisburg district of Hamborn. It is one of four central sewage treatment plants of the Emschergenossenschaft.
Until 1910, the Emscher still flowed into the Rhine at this point. Due to subsidence, the relocation of the river mouth downstream of the Rhine had become necessary. The separate remainder, which is now called Alte Emscher, will continue to drain the associated catchment area. By means of the Alte Emscher and Stockum Alte Emscher pumping stations, the wastewater reaches the Duisburg Alte Emscher sewage treatment plant. After cleaning, they are pumped over the dike into the Rhine.
