The Königsgrube Park is a wild-growing park on the brownfield site of the former Königsgrube colliery. It is now used as a local recreation area as well as for various leisure activities and is part of the Route of Industrial Culture.
In the city triangle of Bochum, Wanne-Röhlinghausen, and Wattenscheid, the two neighboring collieries Königsgrube and Hannover were established in the mid-19th century. Hannover operated from 1854 to 1973, most of the surface facilities were demolished, the Malokow tower and other facilities are now an outpost of the LWL Industrial Museum. Königsgrube operated from 1855 to 1967 and was subsequently completely demolished. Initial plans called for a debris dump and additional residential development on the site, but a citizen initiative in the 1970s led to the creation of the park for the nearby neighborhoods.
