The monastery, later Metelen Abbey in the municipality of Metelen, was founded in 889. Initially, it was a nunnery directly under the Empire, from the 13th century it was a canonical monastery and some of the inhabitants lived according to the Augustinian rule. At the end of the 15th century, it was converted into a secular convent. In 1803 and 1810 it was secularized.
