Marienborn Monastery in Zülpich-Hoven is a former Cistercian convent on the edge of the Eifel. It was founded in 1188 by Cistercian nuns from the Monastery of St. Thomas on the Kyll. Among the most distinguished residents of the monastery is St. Hermann Joseph of Steinfeld, who lived here for a short time and died in 1246. The existing monastery church houses the "Hoven Madonna," one of the most significant Romanesque sculptures in the Rhineland from the 12th century. In the apse, stones with Roman letters are integrated into the wall. The Latin inscriptions refer to a matron sanctuary.
