The Leibnitz mine, sometimes referred to as the Leibnitz-Dante mine, is a former non-ferrous metal ore mine of the Bensberger ore district in Rösrath in the district of Hoffnungsthal. The Leibnitz mining field extended around the street Am Heidenkeller in Sülze.
The first written mention of the Leibnitz mine can be found in the miners' records of the Lüderich mine dated September 20, 1838. It reports on an earlier mining operation "at Heidekeller" without further details. The rights document at the Arnsberg district government begins with a claim application by Dr. Christian Wöllner dated October 24, 1838. He applied for mining rights for the copper ore vein Heidekeller, which was to be named Cäcilia going forward. The staff for the exploration work consisted of two men. In a letter dated February 20, 1839, Wöllner informed the mining jurors that there had been an old mining operation before. The newly opened deep tunnel had now encountered the vein operated by "the old miners." He wished to request the granting again, as he needed the extracted copper ores for his vitriol production. Subsequently, he was granted the name Cäcilia on August 14, 1839. The quarterly payments of 4 ½ silver groschen for the discovery mine and 1 ½ silver groschen for the "measurements" were due starting from the quarter of the Holy Cross in 1839. Since March 15, 1841, no quarterly payments had been made. Therefore, the mine Cäcilia was declared "abandoned," meaning it was without ownership.
