The school had several predecessor schools, so that the history of the school goes back to a Latin school in the 17th century. In 1914, the first Abitur examination took place. In this year, the first building on Waldstraße, today's "old building", was completed and occupied. The building was originally planned and built as a teachers' college, but was never used as such. Today, the school consists of the representative "old building", as well as the so-called "new building" and two remaining pavilions from the 1970s, as well as the multi-purpose building built in 2010 with a cafeteria, recreation and course rooms. Between summer 2010 and summer 2011, the façade of the old building was completely renovated to make it more energy-efficient.
